ABOUT

Hello, and welcome to my online portfolio! My name is James Paterson, and I am a game designer from Toronto, Ontario. I am a 2017 inaugural graduate of the Honours Bachelor of Game Design program from Sheridan College. I am currently working at Gameloft Toronto as a Game Designer. Previously, I was working at Melcher Studios as a Game Developer.

Over the past several years, I have gained experience in every aspect of the game production pipeline, as well as an in-depth understanding of user experience and game design theory. I have a great deal of experience in scripting, prototyping, and taking ideas from paper to final product while working in both individual and collaborative settings. I am an extremely versatile designer, but particularly excel in level design, visual communication, and user experience—and I have a great interest in the techniques and innovations driving these disciplines forward.

I believe effective communication lies at the heart of every great design, and my education alongside a background in visual art allows me to create games, levels, and mechanics, across a wide range of genres with this belief in mind. I create experiences that clearly communicate ideas to effectively teach and guide players, while still supporting and exploring deep gameplay to best challenge and delight them.

Some of the previous projects I’ve worked on include Uncapped, a first-person puzzle-platformer game which was awarded the title of “most unique mechanic” by members of DrinkBox Studios during a Sheridan game lab event; Secret Story, a social iPad game for elders made during my time as a research assistant and game designer at the Sheridan Centre for Elder Research; and Disney Magic Kingdoms, a theme park tycoon game with over 100 million downloads.
